The journal chose their image of a cell undergoing methuosis which was taken with the multiphoton confocal microscope in the UT Advanced Microscopy and Imaging Center on the Health Science Campus. Dr. Maurice Manning, Professor of Biochemistry & Cancer Biology, has been appointed one of four new Distinguished University Professorships by the University of Toledo. This exceptional honor recognizes Dr. Manning's distinguished career and contributions to the university as defined by his academic accomplishments, world-wide collaborations and student education. The Academic Honors Committee considered 41 nominations for this year's appointees, based on exemplary teaching, research, scholarship and professional service. |
| New Faculty The Department of Biochemistry & Cancer Biology wishes to welcome Kathryn Eisenmann, Ph.D. Dr. Eisenmann joined the department in August 2008 as an Assistant Professor. Previously she was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Laboratory of Cell Structure and Signal Integration, Van Andel Research Institute, Grand Rapids, MI. Dr. Eisenmann's research goals are to identify and target critical mechanisms supporting the tumorigenic platform of breast cancer by focusing on the molecular and cellular biology of invasion and metastasis. |

| Aparna Kaul Receives 2008 Satellite Scholarship Congratulations to Aparna Kaul for receiving the 2008 Satellite's Scholarship award! Aparna was chosen by the Cancer Biology program faculty as the outstanding upper level student in the Cancer Biology track. She is a student in the laboratory of Dr. William Maltese. The Satellites are a group of UTHSC volunteers that have a long tradition of providing support and scholarship to the UTHSC community. Great job, Aparna, and keep up the good work! |
| Vipul Bhrigu Receives Travel Award | |
| Vipul Bhrigu, Cancer Biology program student in the laboratory of Dr. Jim Trempe, received a $1,000 travel award to present his work at the XII Parvovirus Workshop, June 1-5, 2008, Cordoba, Spain. Vipul's abstract was entitled "Replication of AAV in NIH 3T3 cells with mouse adenovirus helper." The workshop covered relevant scientific aspects of the field such as molecular biology and biotechnology, diseases associated to parvovirus infections, and current biomedical applications of the parvoviruses. | |

Biochemistry & Cancer Biology graduate, Dr. Jennifer Timpe, has had her research findings appear on the BBC Health Watch web site, "How Hep C Bypasses Cell Defenses. The potentially-fatal hepatitis C virus evades the body's natural defenses by slipping directly from cell to cell, scientists have found." (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7075569.stm) Jennifer is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Birmingham, England, and recently presented preliminary research to the International Symposium on Hepatitis C Virus in Glasgow, Scotland. She completed her doctoral studies in the laboratory of Dr. James Trempe, Professor of Biochemistry & Cancer Biology. | |

Yu Wu, has been awarded her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences (Cancer Biology program), after successfully defending her dissertation entitled "Identification and functional characterization of adipogenesis-related genes" on October 14, 2008 (mentor: Cynthia Smas, D.Sc.). Dr. Wu has accepted a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Robert Casero, The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she will investigate the antineoplastic drug development targeting the polyamine metabolic pathway. |
