BPG CLASSROOM – ROOM No. 119 HEALTH EDUCATION BUILDING
University of Toledo Health Science Campus
The Program in Bioinformatics & Proteomics/Genomics maintains a 16-node Linux cluster for bioinformatic analyses. The Bioinformatics Computer Laboratory consists of 18 desktop iMac dual-boot computers, to accommodate 16 students and an instructor, serving largely to provide UNIX windows for access to the cluster. Also available in the classroom is a dual-processor G5 Macintosh, and a Dell Pentium IV Windows/Linux computer. These are intended for use by researchers, and are located near the door and separately lit so they can be used while classes are in session.
The fields of bioinformatics, proteomics and genomics are aggressively expanding. Knowledge in these areas is increasingly expected of all biomedical researchers, whether in academia, government, or the private sector. These analytical tools are being introduced into the practice of medicine, and into general biology in areas such as ecology, bioremediation, agriculture, etc. In addition, this knowledge is valuable for careers in certain areas of business, law, computer science, and mathematics.
