Dr. Julie Brennan was appointed Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Toledo (UT) College of Medicine in August of 2006. In March of 2007, she was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and in June 2007 was appointed Clinical Associate at UT to work as a dietician. She earned her PhD in Couseling Psychology from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio in August of 2005 and completed her internship at Northwest Ohio Consortium in Toledo, Ohio, with full APA Accredition in August 2005. She completed her MA at The Ohio State University in June 2002 in Counseling Psychology also with full APA accreditation and obtained a BS (Magna Cum Laude) in Dietetics and Psychology from the University of Dayton, Ohio, in May 1999, and completed her Dietetic internship at Mount Caramel College of Nursing in Columbus, OH, and is a Registered Dietitian with the Ohio Board of Dietetics. Her research interests include: wellness, health behavior change, eating disorders, obesity, depression and anxiety. Dr. Brennan is a member of the American Psychological Association (Counseling Psychology) and the Ohio Psychological Association-Graduate Students. |

Linda M. French, M.D., FAAFP Professor & Chairman Dr. Linda French was appointed professor and chair of the Family Medicine Department at the University of Toledo (UT) College of Medicine in November 2006. She earned her medical degree from Austral University Medical School in Valdivia, Chile and completed her family medicine residency at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, Michigan. Dr. French is board certified in family medicine. After completion of her residency training, Dr. French joined the residency faculty at Oakwood and completed a primary care faculty development fellowship at Michigan State University (MSU). Prior to coming to UT Dr., French was Senior Associate Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at MSU. She is a Fellow in the AAMC-sponsored Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) program for the development of women leaders in academic medicine, class of 2007. Dr. French is nationally recognized for her expertise in women’s health and evidence-based medicine. Her research interests include medical decision-making regarding menopausal hormone use and breast cancer risk assessment in primary care practice. She has published extensively on varied topics related to women’s health and is a member of the editorial boards of the journals Family Medicine and The Journal of Family Practice, peer-reviewed journals in the specialty. In 2005 she received the Outstanding Clinician Award at MSU and was also inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. |

Dr. Murthy Gokula was recently appointed assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Toledo (UT) College of Medicine. He earned his medical degree at Siddhartha Medical College in India and completed his family medicine residency at Sparrow Hospital/Michigan State University (MSU) in Lansing, MI. After his residency, Dr. Gokula continued his training at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he completed a fellowship in geriatrics. He is board certified in family medicine, geriatrics and hospice and palliative medicine. Before moving to Toledo, Dr. Gokula was the associate hospice director at Heartland Hospice, Bad Axe, MI and medical director of the long term care unit at Harbor Beach, MI. He has been an invited speaker at several national and regional conferences and written multiple publications, including several on the inappropriate use of urinary catheters in elderly patients. Dr. Gokula’s special clinical interests are in polypharmacy, diseases of the elderly and palliative medicine; he has conducted extensive research about the inappropriate use of foley catheters in hospitals and new models of geriatric care in practice.

Daniel P. Hickey, JD, MBA Associate Professor Mr. Hickey, who is an assistant professor of Family Medicine and Pediatrics, is a native of Toledo. He graduated from the University of Toledo with Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctor degrees and received a graduate certificate in Medical and Health Science Education from the Medical College of Ohio. Mr. Hickey's areas of teaching expertise include practice management and medical/legal issues in health care. He is board certified in healthcare management through the American College of Healthcare Executives and is licensed as an attorney in Ohio. |

Dr. Sanford Kimmel, a native of Scio, Ohio, attended undergraduate and medical school at Ohio State University. He is residency trained and board certified in both family practice and pediatrics. He is a Professor of Clinical Family Medicine and Vice-Chairman. He has been at MUO for over 20 years. Dr. Kimmel has authored many articles and book chapters on pediatric topics of interest to family physicians, especially immunizations and the evaluation and management of children with fever. He is a founding member and has served as Chair of the Group on Immunization Education of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. He is also a reviewer for multiple family practice journals and serves on the editorial board of Family Practice Recertification

Kevin A. Phelps, DO Dr. Phelps is a native of Chittenango, New York, a small city east of Syracuse where “the river runs north.” He is a graduate of Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and is currently Program Director for the Family Practice Residency Program. His special interests include office procedures, including exercise stress testing, no-scalpel vasectomy, and colposcopy. Research interests include assisting patients with lifestyle behavior change leading to improved health. He teaches a competency-based electrocardiography curriculum to residents and medical students. |

Paul Schaefer, MD, PhD Dr. Schaefer was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine. He obtained his MD from the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo, received his PhD from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, and did his residency in Family Medicine at the medical University of Ohio in Toledo. His research interests include mental health and depression.

Constance J. Shriner, PhD, MEd Dr. Shriner is an assistant professor of Family Medicine and Pediatrics. She received both her Master of Education and Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Toledo. Her background and expertise include curriculum development and evaluation. Dr. Shriner is also a faculty member in the Joint Research Program for Pediatrics and Family Medicine and co-directs the Research in Primary Care Graduate Certificate Program - a faculty development program focused on the development of clinical research skills. |

Thomas J. Tafelski, DO, PhD A native of Toledo, Dr. Tafelski has a Ph.D. in anatomy and attended medical school at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his Family Practice Residency here at MUO. His current position at Medical College of Ohio is Clerkship Director and head of Undergraduate Division in the Department of Family Medicine. His most recent project was the development of a required six-week third-year family medicine rotation for medical students here at MUO. |

Born and raised in the Midwest, Dr. Weiner attended Michigan State University where he received his Doctor of Osteopathic Degree in 1988. After completing residencies in obstetrical anesthesiology from Hutzel Hospital, Detroit, MI and anesthesiology at Botsford General Hospital, Farmington Hills, MI, Dr. Weiner practiced as a Staff Anesthesiologist at Doctors Hospital in Columbus and at Mercy Hospital and Parkview Hospital, Toledo. In 1998, he completed the Family Practice Residency program at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center (SVMMC) in Toledo and served as the Associate Director of the Family Practice Residency Program at SVMMC prior to joining the MUO faculty. He is board certified in both Family Practice and Anesthesiology and is a Diplomate of the National Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons. Clinically, Dr. Weiner has a special interest in pain management and actively uses osteopathic manipulation in a family practice setting; he also is involved in research of quality care issues.

Dr. David Weldy was recently appointed assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Toledo (UT) College of Medicine. He earned his medical degree at the Medical College of Ohio, Toledo and completed his family medicine residency at the Medical College of Ohio, Toledo and St. Vincent Medical Center. Dr. Weldy received a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from Kent State University and completed a Family Practice Fellowship in Academic Medicine from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM), Rootstown, OH. He is board certified in family medicine with an added qualification in sports medicine. Prior to returning to Toledo, Dr. Weldy spent 20 years in private practice in Hiram, Mantua, and Ravenna, OH, and since 1992, was an associate clinical professor at NEOUCOM. He served as team physician for Crestwood High School as well as other local high schools and Hiram College, and is currently the team physician for Rogers High School and the University of Toledo Women’s Soccer Team. Dr. Weldy is a member of many professional societies, including the American College of Sports Medicine, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Medical Association, Ohio State Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, and Ohio Academy of Family Physicians. He was cited as one of Northeast Ohio’s top doctors in 2006 and 2007. Dr. Weldy’s clinical interests are sports medicine and exercise physiology. His research interests are in cognition and physical fitness, and coagulation and exercise. |
