WHO ARE THE INSURANCE CARRIERS?
Medical University of Ohio is self insured for:
- $1 million per occurrence
- $3 million aggregate (the maximum dollar amount payable regardless of the number of occurrences within a given year).
The St. Paul Insurance Company provides excess or umbrella coverage over and above Medical University of Ohio's Self Insurance Retention Fund for:
- $10 million per occurrence
- $10 million aggregate (the maximum amount of coverage under the insurance policy with a given year).
WHO ARE THE INSURED?
"CERTAIN COVERED PERSONS" OR NAMED INSURED ARE THOSE INDIVIDUALS PERFORMING DUTIES ON BEHALF OF THE PROVIDER - MEDICAL COLLEGE OF OHIO.
INDIVIDUALS PROVIDING PROFESSIONAL SERVICES FROM WHICH RENUMERATION IS OBTAINED OR EXPECTED TO BE OBTAINED APART FROM OR IN ADDITION TO THE AMOUNT RECEIVED UNDER A FACULTY CONTRACT OR OTHER AGREEMENT WILL NOT QUALIFY AS NAMED INSURED, E.G. A PHYSICIAN'S PERSONAL RISK IN RENDERING MEDICAL CARE TO A PATIENT.
- College and hospital employees working within the scope of their employment.
- College faculty, including physicians and associate staff, as defined in the Self Insured Trust Agreement.
- Trustees and officers
- Volunteer workers
- Intern, resident and fellow physicians/dentists
- MUO interns, residents and fellows rotating through ACADEMICALLY APPROVED medical education programs. An academically approved program is one which the Vice President of Academic Affairs has approved through an executed affiliation agreement.
- There is a specific exclusion of coverage for any intern, resident or fellow participating in activities that are not academically approved medical educational experiences, (i.e. moonlighting).
- Medical University of Ohio students
- Students who pay tuition to MUO and are rotating through ACADEMICALLY APPROVED educational experiences are covered. This includes medical students, graduate school students, graduate nursing students and occupational therapy students.
- The Vice President of Academic Affairs will require copies of the documented agreements between Medical University of Ohio and prospective learning institutions. Information is to include methods that will ensure adequate supervision of students, thereby reducing Medical University of Ohio's liability exposure.
WHAT IS THE PROFESSIONAL LIABILITY INSURANCE REQUIREMENT FOR UNDERGRADUATE MATRICULANTS NOT COVERED BY THE MEDICAL COLLEGE OF OHIO INSURANCE POLICY?
- Students who pay tuition elsewhere but attend Medical College of Ohio (e.g. physical therapy students, undergraduate nursing students) are required to obtain their own professional liability insurance. It is the responsibility of each program administrator to secure validation of coverage.
- Undergraduate Program - Nursing: All students are required to obtain professional liability insurance with a minimum coverage of $1,000,000/$3,000,000 (per occurrence/aggregate) prior to clinical placement.
- Undergraduate Program - Physical Therapy: Each student will be required to obtain professional liability insurance with a minimum coverage of $1,000,000/$3,000,000 (per occurrence/aggregate) at the start of each academic year (i.e. Fall term).
