Cholesterol Research Study

The purpose of this study is to find out if an approved drug that lowers "bad" cholesterol combined with an investigational drug to raise "good" cholesterol levels is more effective in preventing cardiovascular disease (such as heart attack and stroke) when compared with an approved cholesterol-lowering drug alone.

ALL study participants will receive an approved medication to lower "bad" cholesterol.

You may be eligible for:

  • Investigational medication to raise "good" cholesterol and
    lower the "bad" cholesterol
  • Diet and exercise advice
  • Study-related medical care

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

To participate in this study you must
Be between 45 and 75 years old

Be at high risk because of cardiovascular disease (heart attack or stroke) which is present if you:

 
  • have coronary heart disease OR
  • have had a heart attack within the past 5 years OR
  • have had coronary artery bypass surgery or other open-heart surgery, such as a valve replacement, more than 1 month ago OR
  • have had angioplasty or another coronary procedure within the past 5 years OR
  • have had a stroke OR
  • have pre-existing peripheral vascular disease OR
  • have type 2 diabetes
Have a history of high cholesterol

You may not participate in this study if you:
are pregnant or planning to become pregnant or are nursing a baby

have participated in another research study within the last 30 days

are scheduled to undergo a major cardiovascular surgery such as angioplasty or bypass surgery
