First Year Resident
The majority of the first year is devoted to inpatient medicine. The PGY-1 functions as the primary physicians for his/her patients. Working closely with senior residents and attending staff, the PGY-1 is responsible for the development and implementation of each patients' care plan. In addition to inpatient service at all associated hospitals, he/she spends one month on the Ambulatory /Consultation GIM service, one month on the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), and two months on the Cardiology Care Unit (CCU). Night call is every fourth night, and night float one month per year. The first year resident also begins his/her own continuity care clinic, which meets one-half day weekly during the entire year and takes precedence over all other responsibilities.

Second Year Resident
The focus shifts during the second year of residency to a more supervisory role. The resident serves as the leader of a patient care team, which includes two or three PGY-1 residents and two to four medical students. Approximately four to six months are spent in supervising medicine inpatient services including one month of night float.  A month of admitting resident is completed during the PGY-2 year. The continuity clinic continues to meet on a weekly basis for one-half day per week.

Third Year Resident
The continuity clinic continues throughout the PGY-3 year. The largest block of time (seven to eight months) during this year is spent at the resident's discretion, including two months of elective, Endocrinology, Dermatology, Nephrology, Rheumatology, and Ambulatory.  PGY 3 residents are required to rotate on Ambulatory/Consultation GIM, MICU, CCU and night float services.

Electives
All electives provide both an inpatient and outpatient focus. Development of expertise in a wide range of procedural skills for use in general practice is also stressed.
