Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program
The child and adolescent psychiatry residency at the University of Toledo was first accredited in 1974 and has since trained over 40 residents. Training sites were initially scattered in different buildings on the campus. In 1983, a state-of-the-art, modern child and adolescent psychiatric hospital, later named the Kobacker Center opened. This 41,500 square feet facility consolidated inpatient, outpatient, and day treatment services in one building, which is connected to the main hospital by tunnels. The opening of the child and adolescent psychiatric hospital brought in new faculty for the expanded clinical, educational and research activities.

The faculty in the child/adolescent psychiatry division now include 4 child/adolescent psychiatrists, 3 child/adolescent psychologists and one social worker. Part time and voluntary faculty members in the departments of psychiatry, pediatrics and other disciplines have actively contributed to teaching and supervision of residents. Two of the four child/adolescent psychiatrists in the department have served as board examiners for the past ten years. The former chairman, Dr. Zrull, has served as president of the Society of Professors of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the chair of the committee on certification in child and adolescent psychiatry for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc.  Research activities by the faculty and trainees have been represented yearly in the annual meetings of the American Psychiatric Association, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, American Psychological Association, American Orthopsychiatry Association and other professional organizations.

The high quality of the residency program was again recognized in 2003 by the continuous full accreditation of the two-year program by the ACGME since 1974, for another five years. In addition, the Kobacker Center is a site for psychology internship which is a nationally acclaimed program administered by the University of Toledo. Multidisciplinary team work at the Kobacker Center has offered an excellent training ground in social work, education, occupational therapy, therapeutic recreation and nursing through various externships, internships, and postgraduate training.
