The Urology residency program, a fully accredited ACGME certified program, offers six years of training for its graduates and is approved for two residents at each level, for a total of 12 urology residents. Because the program has been so favorably reviewed during the last two residency review evaluations, competition for spots in the urology residency program is strong.

How to Apply

Because we have an early match, the deadline for receipt of applications is September 30th. Applications are received only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). A complete application to our program requires:

• Three letters of reference
• Personal statement
• Dean’s letter
• Valid ECFMG certificate (if applicable)
• Transcripts
• Minimum score of 80 on the USMLE

Interviews for the urology residency program begin in October or November for the Upcoming year. Each year we interview approximately 50 candidates.

Program Description

The first two years of our residency program are “pre-urology” with 12 months spent in surgery disciplines (plastics, vascular, pediatric and general) plus 12 months of urology. The PGY-3, -4 and -6 years are spent studying general urology. The focus of the PGY-5 is split between renal transplant and urology research (50%/50%).

The transplant/laboratory year is designed to provide the resident with major clinical responsibilities of running the renal transplant service and designing and executing a laboratory project. This year allows them to understand scientific methodology as a basis for superior patient care. They are encouraged to obtain a Master of Science degree in the Urological Sciences from the College of Graduate Studies.

The goal of the program is to develop a skilled clinical urologist who will attain board certification and who understands the need for continuing medical education throughout his professional career. These goals are met by faculty evaluation of the resident’s urologic knowledge that is progressive through each level of training. Evaluation takes place by review of patient histories and physical diagnostic findings on a one on one basis, and observation of diagnostic and surgical skills in the operating room. Patient management skills are assessed by regular ward rounds at which time management plans are presented.

Program Strengths

The University of Toledo's Urology Department's 'clinical Urology service' has been recognized at the national level as being progressive and innovative. It is one of only 15 University programs in the United States where renal transplantations are performed by the urology service.

The Urology residents are highly regarded by the full-time and volunteer faculty in other major disciplines as evidence by the evaluations submitted. UT Urology residents have annually participated in the Ohio Urological Society's resident essay contest and their presentations have won top awards each year.

The urology residency program was established in 1950. The program was reviewed by the ACGME residency review commission in December of 2002 and fully re-accredited without citation . The next site visit will take place in 2006.
